E2macpetsNewton's First Law Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. This we recognize as essentially Galileo's concept of inertia, and this is often termed simply the "Law of Inertia".
Newton's' Second Law The relationship between an object's mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F = ma. Acceleration and force are vectors in this law the direction of the force vector is the same as the direction of the acceleration vector. This is the most powerful of Newton's three Laws, because it allows quantitative calculations of dynamics: how do velocities change when forces are applied. According to Newton, a force causes only a change in velocity (an acceleration); it does not maintain the velocity. This is sometimes summarized by saying that under Newton, F = ma. According to Newton an object with a certain velocity maintains that velocity unless a force acts on it to cause an acceleration (that is, a change in the velocity). Or in the case of a whip the mass decreases.
Newton's Third Law For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. I think this is probably self explanatory.
Now if we add Galileo's findings on inertia (see below) We have a complete real world explanation of the action of a whip. Galileo's concept of inertia: an object in a state of motion possesses an " inertia'' that causes it to remain in that state of motion unless an external force acts on it. In order to arrive at this conclusion, which will form the cornerstone of Newton's laws of motion (indeed, it will became Newton's First Law of Motion), Galileo had to abstract from what he, and everyone else, saw. Most objects in a state of motion do NOT remain in that state of motion. For example, a block of wood pushed at constant speed across a table quickly comes to rest when we stop pushing. Galileo, by virtue of a series of experiments (many with objects sliding down inclined planes), realized that you must account properly for a hidden force: the frictional force between the surface and the object. Thus, as we push the block of wood across the table, there are two opposing forces that act: the force associated with the push, and a force that is associated with the friction and that acts in the opposite direction. (In the case of a whip this would be friction from the air and the inherent resistance of the material of the whip.) Galileo realized that as the frictional forces were decreased (for example, by placing oil on the table or in the case of a whip the mass is reduced) the object would move further and further before stopping. From this he abstracted a basic form of the law of inertia: if the frictional forces could be reduced to exactly zero (like reducing the mass and diameter of the the whip to almost zero) an object pushed at constant speed across a frictionless surface of infinite extent will continue at that speed forever after we stop pushing, unless a new force acts on it at a later time. Here the new force would be your hand holding the end of the whip or gravity.
Hope this helps in understanding the physics of the whip.
Victor Tella is an internationally known whip maker and the owner of Quality Whips by Victor Tella. Victor has been making very high quality whips since 1993 and has taught whip cracking seminars all over the United States and the UK. His new web site Bullwhip-Info is intended to be the definitive resource for all things having to do with whips and whip cracking.
E2macpetsThe Discrete Analyzer
Discrete analyzers are well known in clinical testing laboratories. Recently these little work horses have found their way into environmental laboratories, but their full potential in the analysis of water samples has yet to be realized. Environmental labs have found use for them in analyzing nutrients in wastewater and in relieving sample loads or reagent cost.
The Petroleum Industry
Production water needs to be monitored for major cations and anions that are used as indicators of corrosion or scaling tendency. Normally these water samples are collected and sent off to chemical supply company laboratories that use a variety of instruments and then calculate scaling or corrosion tendency indexes. A discrete analyzer makes it possible to analyze all important ions used in the scaling and corrosion index.
It is also useful to monitor production water for existing scale and corrosion inhibitors. These colorimetric tests are easily adapted to discrete analyzers making it possible to analyze these parameters at the same time and on the same instrument used for scale and corrosion index testing.
Discrete analyzers can also check for trace metals. Iron, manganese, chromium, nickel, etc. can all be determined, again in the same sample, on the same instrument, and essentially at the same time.
How the Discrete Analyzer Works
Discrete analyzers are essentially automated manual spectrophotometers. The instrument pipets sample into reaction segments, adds reagent, and then measures concentration versus pre-stored calibration curves. A huge advantage to discrete analyzers is they use very little reagent and/or sample and almost the entire process is computer controlled.

E2macpetsKeeping a turtle as a pet has come a long way from the plastic palm tree set-ups of old. From the common box turtle to the less-common Ornate Wood Turtle to the extremely rare albino soft shell, there's a turtle for every lifestyle, budget, and personality. Turtles make fascinating, peaceful pets, but their penchant for longevity means you must be prepared to devote as many as thirty or forty years of care and attention to your new reptilian friend. If you're ready to share your heart and home with one of nature's most ancient and mysterious creatures, then read on for some great pet turtle care advice.
The type of care your turtle will require depends, for the most part, on the type of turtle you plan on getting. While you will certainly want to learn as much as you can about the specific breed of turtle you select, there are some basic rules that apply to pet turtle care, and these rules are different for the two main categories of turtles-water turtles and land turtles. To ensure your turtle's long life and happiness, you should strive to give him a comfortable, home-like environment. For water turtles (such as sliders, coots, and map turtles) this means providing at least 20 gallons of tank space complete with a small "island" for basking, a heat lamp for simulating sunlight, and a UVB light to help the turtle absorb maximum nutrients from his food. Water turtles are graceful, speedy swimmers, so the more swimming room they have, the better! Land turtles (such as box turtles) require plenty of room to roam with hollowed logs or flowerpots to hide in, natural vegetation, a basking area with a heat lamp, and a shallow dish of water for soaking. Many people choose to keep their land turtles outside in specially designed pens. This enables the turtles to not only enjoy the great outdoors, but to hibernate in the winter just as they would in the wild.
While the housing needs of water and land turtles differ dramatically, their diets are actually quite similar. As you learn to take care of a pet turtle, you'll discover that turtles, like most people, are omnivores. This means you'll probably be adding some groceries to your list! There are several varieties of pre-made "turtle chow" available at pet stores, but it's best to use those products sparingly and offer your turtle a wide range of foods. Most land and water turtles alike will happily devour crickets, earthworms, and snails. Water turtles love chasing feeder fish such as minnows and goldfish around their tank and many will also eat cooked chicken, shrimp, and tuna Never feed your turtle hamburger meat, as it's far too high in fat for your turtle to digest properly. Turtles also enjoy a nice salad or fruit plate from time to time. They're particularly fond of Romaine lettuces (never feed iceberg or spinach), dandelion greens, carrots, cantaloupe, strawberries, blackberries, tomatoes, and apples. Who knows! Having a turtle might just help you on your way to healthier eating habits (though we probably can't say the same for exercise).
While you may not feel like a pet turtle care expert right now, you'll hopefully have many happy years to become one! Caring for a pet turtle can be an experience that is both unique and rewarding in a pet-keeping culture dominated by dog and cat owners. While a turtle may not greet you at the door or curl up purring on your feet, it provides a lower maintenance option for busy people who don't have time for a dog or cat. At the end of a long, hard day, a turtle's gentle, peaceful, low-stress personality will surely be a calming influence and inspiring refuge in a speed-driven society. Take some time to relax, munch on a piece of fruit, and enjoy time well spent in the company of your new turtle!
